|ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATION, 1989 Best Short Film In this stirring film, the wanton destruction of the Amazon rain forest and the plight of the area's indigenous people are poignantly reflected through the eyes of a young Kayapo Indian boy. When the sacred hucti eagle that protects his village disappears, the boy and his grandfather set out to find a new guardian. Traveling by dugout canoe through the shimmering beauty of the Amazon, they meet members of a neighboring tribe and, temporarily abandoning their quest, accompany them to the city, where a great gathering is in progress. There Indians and others (including rock star Sting) are meeting to protest the despoilment of the forest. Though captivated by his first glimpse of life beyond his village, the boy quickly gains awareness of the danger to the rain forest and the world. The hucti eagle is never found, but the journey proves to be a rite of passage for the boy, who now has a new and essential task to which to devote himself. Colorful and heartfelt, the glimpses of Indian customs and ritual, AMAZON DIARY offers young people a sympathetic, human introduction to a serious problem with global implications.|
