NBC-TV. "The Gene Austin Story" with GEORGE GRIZZARD, EDWARD ANDREWS, SCOTT McKAY, JEROME COWAN, PHYLLISS NEWMAN, WAYNE HOWELL and GENE AUSTIN. Written by ERNEST KINOY. A heart-warming musical biography of Gene Austin, one of the most famous recording stars of the Roaring Twenties. Genes record of "My Blue Heaven" sold 7 million copies and remains one of the best remembered songs of all time! His other records, such as "Melancholy Baby," almost always became hits. Written in the style of Hollywood biographies of the Forties, the construction of the drama, set on Austins yacht, "My Blue Heaven," is so carefully devised that past and present seem to be preceeding at the same time. All the music heard on the show was sung by Gene Austin and lip-synched by George Grizzard. After the drama, Gene Austin himself appears and sings a song from his newly recorded album. A strange sight indeed, as Gene turns away from a TV monitor as the play ends, a wry look coming over his face as he says, "My...the things you wont do when youre, my." Highly recommended. 51 minutes.
