When prostitute Amy Post finds herself in trouble with the law, she decides to hitchhike, which unites her with drifter and former prizefighter Elmer Pratt. The two decide to hit the road together, on a journey to California, and after a series of encounters with bizarre people, they learn to trust one another and gain confidence in themselves.
