Amazon details

Based on the novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, Botany Bay tells the story of the birth of Australia as a nation - drawing its founding settlers from the dreary prisons of England. Condemned to live out the rest of their existence in a foreign land, these convicted criminals are given a chance for reformation on new soil. Among them are Alan Ladd, a rebellious medical student unjustly accused of highway robbery, and Patricia Medina, a pretty young actress sentenced in a dispute over the ownership of a necklace. In order to reach their new life in the British penal colony of Botany Bay, they have to survive the grueling, 267-day voyage of the prison ship Charlotte - and treachery of its satanic captain James Mason. Boarding the ship in London, Ladd learns he has been granted a pardon but Mason refuses to release him. Instead, the sadistic captain gains pleasure from punishing his captive throughout the nine month journey. Meanwhile, both men vie for the affection of Medina, who isn't above playing up to Mason in exchange for special privileges while she falls in love with Ladd. When the ship finally lands at its destination, the film comes to a crashing climax that makes it one of the most exciting sea adventures ever filmed. The Franz Waxman musical score heightens the drama.
